Ways to Save Energy

As the costs of living continue to spiral and energy prices reach unprecedented levels, we’re all looking for ways to save money. Thermostats have probably already been turned down, but here are some other practical steps you can you take, to help save energy whilst still heating your home.

Nathan Fage from NLF Plumbing & Heating is servicing a boiler.
  • Your boiler should be serviced annually, just as you would MOT your car, to ensure it is safe. A service will also check to see if your boiler is working at its optimum efficiency. The engineer should be looking inside the boiler case to find signs of wear and tear or leaking parts. Replacing a faulty part will always be cheaper than replacing your whole boiler! Give us a call to book in.

  • On your boiler, look for your central heating dial which is normally set around 75-80º. We would recommend adjusting this to 50-55º. This decreases the temperature of the water flowing to your radiators and less gas is therefore used.

  • If your boiler has a hot water pre-heat, we recommend you turn it off. Some boilers have an ‘eco mode’, in which case, choose this. It might take a little longer for hot water to come though your tap, as your boiler is not heating a store of hot water, but it will save you money.

  • Sludge is the number one cause of boiler breakdown. You should power flush your system to extend the life of your boiler. For even more peace of mind, you can protect your boiler by fitting a Magnaclean Filter to catch the sludge before it reaches your system. These steps will help your system work at optimum efficiency and reduce your household’s carbon emissions.

  • If your boiler is outside or in a garage, we highly recommend lagging all pipes. This will ensure heat isn’t lost to the atmosphere.

  • Use smart thermostats. These can be controlled wirelessly, or the most up to date even ‘learn how you live’. Temperatures can be adjusted whilst you are out and programs created to heat your home in the way that works best for you.
